This is the first time for the annual global forum on human settlements to be held in Africa. GFHS 2019 will be convened at the United Nations Conference Center in Addis Ababa (UNCC-AA)

The digital revolution, led by information technology characterized by mobile internet, big data, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain technology, is on the rise. While promoting economic and social transformation, information technology and the digital economy have also triggered comprehensive and profound changes for urban development and human settlements, which is reshaping our cities and communities. It has been stressed in global agendas that adopting a smart-city approach that makes use of opportunities from digitalization, green smart building and mobility, clean energy and innovative technologies can provide options for inhabitants to make more environmentally friendly choices and boost sustainable economic growth and enable cities to improve their service delivery.

Supported by the Foreign Ministry of Ethiopia, GFHS 2019 is co-organized by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the World Urban Campaign (WUC), in cooperation with Universal Peace Federation (UPF), Global One Belt One Road Association (GOBA) and other international organizations.

Senior officials from the UN, Ethiopia and other national governments will join city mayors, heads of multinational corporations, civil society representatives, well-known experts to provide keynote addresses and participate in multi-stakeholder dialogues on how to harness the huge opportunities arising from the digital revolution for upgrading the planning, construction, management, and financing of cities and human settlements, thus making them greener, smarter and more sustainable as well as prosperous. More than 400 stakeholders will attend the conference and contribute to its deliberations and outcome.

GFHS 2019 aims to provide a valuable global platform for high-level dialogue and sharing of innovative approaches and solutions, strategies, technologies and successful local experiences. The forum seeks to strengthen capacity building, foster new partnerships, boost urban innovation, accelerate effective actions, and support various parts of Africa and beyond, to develop inclusive green sustainable economy, to promote pragmatic cooperation in the context of the “Belt and Road Initiative” and to drive progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.

The “Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards Ceremony 2019” (SCAHSA 2019) will be held in an appropriately befitting way to recognize excellence in sustainable development practices and innovations. More than 300 sustainable development practices and innovations around the world have submitted for SCAHSA 2019 competition.

The meeting will result in an outcome document– Addis Ababa Declaration and provide inputs to the World Urban Campaign activities and World Urban Forum 2020 in Abu Dhabi in February 2020.
